Ryder Cup 2023: Tommy Fleetwood admits he had a premonition he would earn Europe’s first point in Rome.
Tommy Fleetwood reveals premonition he was going to get Europe’s winning point in Rome
Thomas Paul Fleetwood (born 19 January 1991) is an English professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour and European Tour. He has won six times on the European Tour.
In a recent interview he stated that he had a premonition that he would win the Ryder Cup for Team Europe many holes before providing the winning point in Rome.
Fleetwood won three of his four matches as Luke Donald’s team won 16.5-11.5 at Marco Simone GC, where Europe won for the seventh time in a row.
Europe led by five points heading into the last day, when Fleetwood overcame Rickie Fowler 3&1 in the penultimate singles match to assure the hosts would reclaim the title and revenge their record-breaking loss at Whistling Straits in 2021.
Fleetwood took an unassailable lead following a spectacular tee shot at the driveable par-four 16th, taking him two up with two to play and ensuring at least the half-point required to move the hosts to 14.5 points, with the conclusion drawing analogies to Europe’s 2018 home victory.
“I’ve never told anyone this, but I was walking down the 11th hole and something came over me,” Fleetwood confessed exclusively to Sky Sports. “When you play, you get a vice-captain, and Fran [Francesco Molinari] was mine every match, then he walked with me for most of the singles.” He played a significant role in my Ryder Cup victory.
