ANNOUNCEMENT: Coach Matt Lafleur announces..
Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur announced that former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh will be consulting for the Packers in a flexible role.
Focusing on providing a defensive perspective to aid LaFleur’s offense.
Saleh attended Packers practice on Wednesday as the team began preparations for their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“I thought it would be beneficial to have him here. He’s helping us on offense,” LaFleur said.
“Having a defensive perspective on that side is always valuable, giving us feedback on what we’re doing.”
Saleh, who was dismissed by the Jets two weeks ago, will be in Green Bay until Thursday, then will head home on Friday.
In 2022, the Packers brought in former NFL defensive back Aubrey Pleasant for a similar role, providing defensive insights to the offense.
LaFleur praised Saleh as a “top-tier defensive strategist” who could help the Packers offense better understand how to “attack defenses.”
“It’s a great learning opportunity for him and for us, offering insights into how opponents might approach defending us,” LaFleur said.
“He can identify weaknesses in the defense we face, and that’s how we plan to use him.”
LaFleur emphasized that Saleh will not be involved with the defense, expressing full confidence in first-year. D
efensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, who previously worked with Saleh in San Francisco.
“Haf and our defensive staff are doing a fantastic job,” LaFleur added.
Saleh was the 49ers’ defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020 and spent the last four seasons as the Jets’ head coach.
In five of the past six seasons, Saleh’s defenses ranked in the top 10 for fewest yards allowed.
LaFleur and Saleh’s relationship goes back to their time on the coaching staff at Central Michigan in the early 2000s and continued at the pro level with the Houston Texans.
Their friendship is close, with LaFleur having served as the best man at Saleh’s wedding.
